In December of 2024 Ushio started sample shipments of the HL40213MG, a single-mode laser diode (LD) with the industry’s highest optical output power of 400mW in the 405nm wavelength band, which has stable beam quality over a wide operating temperature range (-5°C to 85°C). In March of 2025, we are also planning to offer samples of the HL40211MG, a LD with a built-in photodiode (PD) for monitoring optical output power of the same series.
Single-mode LDs with a wavelength of 405 nm are widely used as a pickup light source for Blu-ray discs, and in recent years they have been widely utilized in industrial sensors, medical equipment, measurement and analysis instruments, 3D scanners, 3D printers, and other applications. With the expansion of applications, the demand for LDs with higher output power and more stable beam quality is also increasing. In 2023, Ushio started mass production and shipment of the HL40161/163 Series, a 175 mW single-mode LD in the 405 nm wavelength band, but this time, by optimizing the LD chip design, we have improved the optical output power and successfully developed the HL40213MG, the industry’s highest output power single-mode LD at 400 mW. Adopting advanced crystal growth technology and a unique optical confinement control structure, this product maintains transverse single-mode oscillation even in the high optical output power of 400mW, while ensuring uniform and stable beam quality and high reliability over a wide range of operating temperatures ranging from -5℃ to 85℃. This product will enable high-precision measurement of targets even with low reflectance for measurement applications, and is expected to further upgrade its performance for industrial sensors and measurement/analysis equipment, such as wide-area 3D scanners and high-speed 3D printers.
