For many years, high pressure sodium (HPS) were used for supplemental lighting in horticulture. Greenhouse growers, especially in northern latitudes, often rely on lighting to produce uniform, consistent, high-quality crops throughout the year.

With the introduction of double-ended 1,000 watt lamps, the efficiency of HPS lamps increased considerably, and Ushio has played a large part in this. For more than two decades, Ushio has been engaged in the research and development of conventional HPS lamps and related power supplies with undiminished intensity and great success.

For some years now, more and more HPS systems have been replaced by the newer and more efficient LED technology. Recently, however, this trend has leveled off: many greenhouse operators have realized how important the additional heat output generated by conventional HPS lighting is. It replaces part of the greenhouse's heating costs and provides many plants with the much-needed warmth to thrive.
